6 Steps To Hard-Reset Your Life

And find your obsession in the process.
6 Steps To Hard Reset Your Life

I’ve reset my life many times.

  • Once when I moved to Spain
  • Once when I moved to Portugal
  • Once when I took a year off in Italy
  • Once when I moved back to Amsterdam
  • Once when I left home to travel the world

Now once again by writing, building, and creating on the internet.

The feeling with all of these decisions is always the same:

The feeling of uncertainty.

  • You don’t know what’s going to happen next
  • You don’t know if you’ve made the right decision
  • You don’t know if you’re going to regret it in 6 months time

But I’m a big believer this feeling is what we need to pursue.

It’s takes courage, faith, and commitment to surrender to the process.

That’s what separates winners from the rest. They’re not afraid of losing.

They don’t have a problem with sacrificing everything they’ve got because they understand that to gain everything you have to be willing to lose it too.

If you:

  • Feel friction with your goals
  • Feel lost and confused on your next move
  • Feel stuck in a vicious cycle of unknowingness
  • Procrastinate on tasks you know you need to do
  • Tell yourself X, but your actions align with Y, and Z

You need to hard-reset your life.

Here’s how I’d do it:

Give Yourself Some Credit

It’s easy to be hard on yourself.

  • Constantly comparing yourself to others
  • Wondering why you’re not where you want to be
  • And to top it off? You then beat yourself up about it

When’s the last time you were genuinely kind to yourself?

When’s the last time you said:

“You know what? I’ve come a long way, and I’m proud of the progress I’ve made.”

Just because you can’t see how much you’ve achieved it doesn’t mean you haven’t achieved anything.

Stop the negative self-talk. Treat yourself like you would a friend.

Prioritise Your Energy

As I get older I’m much more protective of my energy.

I never used to view sleep as something that was important to me.

In my younger days, I would:

  • Go out on weekends
  • Not sleep
  • Then go straight to work

I was a complete nut case.

But in my defence, our bodies at that age are almost superhuman.

They can handle anything.

But as I look back – just because we can handle things it doesn’t mean we should be doing it.

We don’t neglect things for the sheer sake of neglecting it. It’s stupid.

Take care of you and your energy. It’s the only thing you’ve got.

Write Long And Hard About What Hurts

Ernest Hemingway said “Write hard and clear about what hurts”.

We’re always questioning ourselves.

  • Our abilities
  • Our thoughts
  • Our fears
  • Our lives
  • Our experiences

Absolutely everything.

We hate the idea that we don’t have what we want. That leads us to building a negative self-image of ourselves. That’s why writing’s such a powerful tool.

It empties the mind and allows us to gain perspective of where we’re at, the way we think, and how we truly feel about ourselves.

Everyone has their blind spots.

It’s important we learn what they are because if we don’t we’re more prone to being influenced by them.

Socrates: To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom.

Practice Doing Absolutely Nothing

We live in a world where technology dominates reality.

Everywhere you look there’s a:

  • Tv
  • Phone
  • Tablet
  • Laptop
  • Computer

And whatever else it is that they’re building these days.

We’re absolutely hooked.

Stepping away from mindless consumption gives our minds time to think.

It’s creates an opportunity for us to create new connections with our current level of understanding.

That’s why our best ideas come on walks, in the shower, or when we’re about to go to bed.

Communicate With Mother Mature

The world is a living, breathing entity.

Each morning I wake and say thank you for another day. Throughout the day I silently bless people on the street. “I wish you happiness, health, and joy”, and before I go to sleep I list 3 things I am grateful for.

Whether you believe this to be true or not, take this idea into consideration:

Life is an accumulation of how we feel. At any given moment you have the capacity to feel however you want. You could feel like the baddest man on the planet. The next incarnation of Mike Tyson. Or decide to be the next Elon Musk.

Rather than feeling like the world is empty, why not feel as if the world is full?

If our thoughts create our actions, and our actions create our lives. Wouldn’t it be wise to see the world through the lens of appreciation rather than the opposite?

To Wrap Things Up

There’s nothing worse than feeling stuck in life. You’ve got all the potential in the world but you don’t know how to use it.

You go from idea to idea but make no real progress on your goals. You’re stuck in a cycle of knowing you could but not doubling down on anything.

This is because you’ve tricked yourself. You don’t care as much as you think you do.

You’ve convinced yourself of a certain set of goals but your intuition doesn’t agree with you. It refuses to let you tap into deep work and creates resistance every time you try.

The solution is to figure out what you truly care about, deep down within you, and align those goals with habits that extract your potential from within you.
