Turn Your Dreams Into A Plan Of Action

If you want to achieve your dreams you need a plan that stares you in the face.

When you pick goals that are aligned with what you care about, they’re much easier to put into practice.

You don’t need to:

  • Fight with perfectionism
  • Motivate yourself to get started
  • Or go to war with the idea of failing

You’re driven by the idea itself.

That’s why it’s important to figure out what you genuinely care about.

So many people pick a goal based on what they think they want, rather than what they know they want.

There’s a small difference between the two, but the psychological effects are clear.

One is driven by obligation, the other by genuine desire.

Here’s how to figure it out for yourself:

Identify Your Life’s Purpose

A lot of people think you find your purpose through trial and error, and while I’d say they’re half right (you have to take action), they’re wrong.

Why spend months, if not years, taking action to figure out what you want when you could just ask yourself a simple question:

What do you care about the most?

If you had all the money and power in the world, which big problem would you solve?

Big problem you'd love to solve in the world

That’s your biggest driver.

When you search the world for purpose (by action) you imply it’s something outside of you that must be found.

But you don’t find your purpose, you discover it.

And you discover it by asking yourself the right questions.

What do you genuinely care about?

Break It Down Into Yearly Goals

Now you’ve discovered what you care about (your current life’s purpose), let’s turn that idea into actionable goals for the next year.

What goals could you set that align with your life’s purpose that would make next year a good year?

The more specific you are, the better.

Clarity breeds action.

Suddenly, things start to become a lot clearer.

We’ve figured out what we genuinely care about (that drives us internally), and now we’ve aligned that idea with actionable goals to achieve over the next 12 months.

Break Your Yearly Goals Into Monthly Goals

Now to gain more clarity, break down your 1-year goals into actionable steps for the coming months.

Example:

Complete this for the next 12 months. (or however far forward you wish to plan).

You’ll end up with something like this:

Purpose > Yearly Goals > Monthly Goals.

All that’s left is to break our monthly goals down into daily tasks and habits.

Break Your Monthly Goals Into Daily Tasks & Habits

Now you’re clear on your monthly tasks, organise them in terms of priorities and daily habits.

That way it’s clear and obvious what you need to do to get the ball rolling.

I have a set of habits I check off each day so I know I’m moving in the right direction.

Hold Yourself Accountable Through Daily Self-Reflection

Setting big goals are great, the hard part is holding yourself accountable.

That’s why you need a system or routine to check-in with yourself.

A lot of people have this idea of “Once I hit X, Y, or Z, my life will change forever.”

But I can tell you from first hand experience, this isn’t true.

Building online is coming to terms with the idea that you have to do this every waking day of your life.

There’re no such things as quick fixes.

And the biggest mistake you’ll make is thinking one day you’ll be finished.

“Most men make the error of thinking that one day it will be done. They think, “If I can work enough, then one day I could rest.” Or, “One day my woman will understand something and then she will stop complaining.” Or, “I’m only doing this now so that one day I can do what I really want with my life.” The masculine error is to think that eventually things will be different in some fundamental way. They won’t. It never ends. As long as life continues, the creative challenge is to tussle, play, and make love with the present moment while giving your unique gift.” – David Deida

You have to learn how to lead, manage, and hold yourself accountable on a daily basis.

The best way to do this is self-reflection.

I reflect:

  • Most mornings to set the tone for the day ahead
  • Most evenings to plan out tomorrow’s work
  • Every week to make sure I’m on track

And every month to make sure I’m heading in the right direction.

Everyone’s different, and what works for me might not work for you.

You have to test a bunch of different ideas and come to your own conclusions.
